Nuclear Regulatory Commission Meets with Navajo Nation

As nuclear threats reappear on the world stage many people remain unaware of the deep costs of the Cold War arms race.  Human suffering and economic costs related to those activities will impact communities and linger for generations to come.   It is well known and widely reported that Native People have born the brunt of the impacts from nuclear weapons development and testing, from the Marshall Islands to Kazakstan.   The Nevada Test Site sits on the ancestral lands of the Western Shoshone Nation.   Early in the nuclear age uranium mining activities were intensely focused on the Southwest United States.  Many tribes were affected by uranium mining and refining operations – and are still affected.  This article reports on an historic meeting, long overdue, between the Navajo (Dineh) people and the NRC.  Let’s hope the NRC is responsive to this ongoing crisis the Dineh people have been living with for decades, and let’s hope that world leaders can lead with their hearts and minds, with wisdom, not with greed or hatred, on issues related to nuclear weapons and all things nuclear – to avoid more human suffering.
